In collaboration with Ifremer and Acobiom, the Diag4Zoo technical team analyzed the toxicogenomic effects of diuron on Pacific oysters and the impact of this herbicide on several generations of oysters

Montpellier, September 4th 2017

In a study published in August 2017 in the journal Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety, scientific teams from Ifremer and technical teams from Acobiom and Diag4Zoo explored the toxicogenomic effects on the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, of parental exposure to diuron, a herbicide frequently detected in coastal marine environments.

This study provided evidence that exposure of oyster broodstock to diuron during gametogenesis results in changes in the offspring, namely alterations in transcriptomic profiling, increased overall DNA methylation levels, and reduced growth and survival during the first year of life.

This study also demonstrated the difficulties in developing potential predictive genomic tools to detect specific indirect impacts of contaminants in environmental risk assessments. However, the results obtained indicate that chronic environmental exposure to diuron over multiple generations can have significant long-term impacts on oyster populations with adverse health effects.
